Adding New Hardware To Your Windows Computer - Many a times, you might be in need of adding a hardware device to your computer. Most of them would be plug-n-play which means you can start using the device as soon as you connect the device to your computer. But this might not be the case always. 

Sometimes you might be in need of adding the device manually to your computer. The process in simple terms means that you are telling the computer that you have added a new device to it.

Devices like printers, scanners, speakers etc. might be detected by the computer itself almost all the times but if that does not happen you have to add the hardware manually based on the version of Windows Operating System you use. The steps to add hardware manually for various windows operating system are given below.


For Windows 98:

  • Click on the start icon on your computer desktop screen
  • Select Settings option in the menu
  • Then click Control Panel
  • Select Add New Hardware icon and select Next
  • Now the system will scan for any devices
  • The computer will produce a list of hardware that are found
  • You need to select the device and click Next
  • Now you can start using the device


For Windows XP:

  • Click on Start icon on desktop screen
  • Click on Start icon on desktop screen
  • XP classifies hardware into different groups and shows the options.
  • Select a type in which the device belongs. For example, if the device is a printer, select Printers and others.
  • The computer will scan and show the name of the printer connected to it.
  • Select that option and click Add Hardware option which will be at the left hand side of the screen.
  • Then you will get Add New Hardware Wizard on the screen.
  • By clicking the Next button, the device can be added manually.


For Windows Vista and 7:

  • Click on the Windows Logo (the start button in XP will appear as a round logo in Vista and 7).
  • Click on the control panel option
  • Select the Classic View option at the top left corner
  • You can find Add New Hardware option at the top of the screen
  • This opens Add New Hardware Wizard
  • Selecting the suitable options and clicking “Next” installs the device to your computer.

These are not the compulsory order to be followed but these steps are easy to follow for a new computer user or a user who is not so familiar with the Windows computer.
